Have We Surrendered To Climate Collapse?
Hiya,
This month, I decided to dive into the concept of “overshoot.” A term that has increasingly been wielded by liberal capitalist governments to make it look like they are dealing with climate change and runaway emissions, but instead are just acquiescing to fossil capital and business-as-usual. This month’s video and the research that came out of it were inspired by Andreas Malm and Wim Carton’s book Overshoot, which I highly recommend reading. You can find the link for the book below, alongside the usual quotes and links I found useful during the research process.
Three Quotes:
“The logic of overshoot scenarios, therefore, lies with the possibility that future carbon-removal costs will be discounted (relative to today’s mitigation costs) to an extent that it makes sense to acquire a carbon debt now.”
— Nature
“To argue that we can safely overshoot 1.5°C, or any amount of warming, is saying the quiet bit out loud: we simply don’t care about the increasing amount of suffering and deaths that will be caused while the recovery is worked on.”
— The Conversation
“For many people, the climate that they will experience after overshoot will not be what they had experienced before it — even if global mean surface temperatures return to levels before the overshoot.”
— Nature
