Why We Need Socialism (to Save the Planet)
Helllooooo! Happy Friday!!
This video is the second part of a two-part video series exploring what we should be striving for in the climate movement. After making the videos on fossil capital, I felt it was necessary to present actual economic and political solutions to those massive problems. So below you can find my video exploring ecosocialism. Even though this is my longest video ever, I feel like I only brushed the surface. As always, below the video, you can find three quotes and three resources I found illuminating during my research. Also, if you’re interested in diving a bit deeper into the subject, I’ve uploaded a bonus video on the ecological impacts of Soviet Planning as well as an hour-and-twenty-minute interview with the authors of Half-Earth Socialism on Nebula.
You can watch the bonus video on the USSR's ecological impact on Nebula here: https://nebula.tv/videos/occ-how-environmentally-destructive-was-soviet-planning You can watch the full interview with the authors of Half-Earth Socialism on Nebula here: https://nebula.tv/videos/occ-an-interview-with-the-authors-of-halfearth-socialism
Enjoy!
Three Quotes:
“ Our job is to show that replacing capitalism is not enough, as replacements can be feeble and temporary. What comes next needs to address the current system’s flaws and be better in so many ways that the status quo simply will not make sense anymore. The alternative needs to make capitalism outdated, pointless, and obsolete.”
— Sabrina Fernandes
“For Marx, the only lasting path to sustainability is the ‘conscious and rational treatment of the land as permanent communal property’–i.e. the abolition of private landed property. Ecological sustainability is only a possibility in ‘a future society of associated producers,’ a socialist society, which could bring about a new and higher synthesis, a union of agriculture and industry.”
— Anita Waters
“We cannot simply build isolated utopias while the rest of the world burns, nor can we wait for the slow process of reformist reform to kick in. We cannot simply heal our individual trauma, nor can we consume better to save the environment. We cannot vote harder and place all our hope in a few individuals in Congress. Climate change will kill us before any of these strategies liberate the planet from capitalism.”
